Recognition
In 2010, the entire sports industry grew to an estimated size of $414 billion, over four times the size of the auto manufacturing industry and nearly seven times the size of the film industry.
Endorsements alone are a significant investment in the consumer and retail side of sports. Adidas paid Los Angeles Galaxy player David Beckham $160 million for a lifetime contract. Tiger Woods signed a $100 million endorsement contract for five years with Nike. Lebron James also signed an endorsement contract with Nike that gives him $90 million over seven years.
Similarly advertising during sporting events contributes a pretty penny to the sports industry. According to the Wall Street Journal, 30 seconds worth of commercial time during ABC's coverage of the 2010 World Cup Final cost around $250,000. For the 2006 Torino Winter Games, a 30 second ad cost advertisers an average of $350,000.
The sports industry is not made of athletes alone. Managers, agents, coaches, physical therapists, doctors, announcers, and trainers all contribute to the success of the sports industry. A degree from American Sports University will give you the tools and skills to enter this special workforce and excel.

ASU Goes To China!
Dr. Harry Hwang visited several cities in China late this year. As part of a trip to fundraise and also forge relationships with Chinese educational institutions, Dr. Hwang visited Beijing, Xingtai and Yungil.
In Beijing, Dr. Hwang spent one week at the Beijing Sports University where he embarked on negotiations for a Memorandum of Understanding with the sports management department. The MOU calls for an exchange of faculty and students between ASU and Beijing Sports University. He also spent time at the Beijing Sports Academy, a high school interested in matriculating students to ASU. The trip also included a meeting with the Chinese Tae Kwon Do Association.
Of the potential growth in the sports industry in China, Dr. Hwang said, "China's education system is yet still developing towards the Western standard. As such, it stands to be a opportune market to partner with ASU. I look forward to partnering with the government and Chinese educational institutions."
