"Welcome to the website of American Sports University, the
nation's first and only 4-year university dedicated to educating the
future leaders of the sports industry.
Here at ASU, we strive to inculcate in our students the
motivation, entrepreneurship, innovation, invention, outreach, and
pragmatic love of knowledge to become pioneers in the growing $414
billion sports business. Congratulations on taking the next steps
toward your future. We hope to see you soon!"
In 2010, the entire sports industry grew to an estimated size of $414 billion, over four times the size of the auto manufacturing industry and nearly seven times the size of the film industry.
Endorsements alone are a significant investment in the consumer and retail side of sports. Adidas paid Los Angeles Galaxy player David Beckham $160 million for a lifetime contract. Tiger Woods signed a $100 million endorsement contract for five years with Nike. Lebron James also signed an endorsement contract with Nike that gives him $90 million over seven years.
Similarly advertising during sporting events contributes a pretty penny to the sports industry. According to the Wall Street Journal, 30 seconds worth of commercial time during ABC's coverage of the 2010 World Cup Final cost around $250,000. For the 2006 Torino Winter Games, a 30 second ad cost advertisers an average of $350,000.
The sports industry is not made of athletes alone. Managers, agents, coaches, physical therapists, doctors, announcers, and trainers all contribute to the success of the sports industry. A degree from American Sports University will give you the tools and skills to enter this special workforce and excel.
